Tar Heel Tip of the Week: Contractor Missing In Action?

Monday, March 9th, 2015 by Jaimie Hooker

You hired a reliable, trustworthy contractor to work on your home, or so you thought. You suddenly cannot get in touch with your contractor when you need them or have found that they have gone out of business.

Contractor Red Flags:

“We’ve been in business since…”

Many contractors say they have been fixing basements for many years, when in fact they just added these services to an existing business or started the business from scratch after working for another contactor (some may have even tried working for us in the past). Beware of being part of their learning curve and don’t rely on a warranty from a company that doesn’t have a track record.

“Contractor’s Guarantee”

We have some competitors who promise lifetime guarantees on their sump pumps. This is commonly referred to as a “Contractor’s Guarantee,” because pump manufactures would never guarantee a mechanical device for life. The customer is pleased to get a “lifetime guarantee” on the pump, until the day the pump fails. Is that a responsible waterproofing contractor?

Other contractors make promises they will only be able to honor, IF, they are still in business when called. There are plenty of trade talented craftsmen and contractors who struggle with the business side of their operations. If a business is struggling to pay its bills, will they be around to honor their warranties?

Does your contractor have a BBB or Angie’s List accreditation? Can they provide you with customer testimonials? Do they have a service department? Does your contractor have a backup plan for you and your home in case their business fails?
