The American Society of Home Inspectors is the oldest and most respected association for home inspectors in North America. It was established in 1976 by a group of home inspectors with a vision to build awareness and professionalism in the home inspection field. The association requires upholding high standards of practice and excellence in the profession from all of its members. Membership is an earned credential after passing an extensive written test and performing a minimum of 250 inspections.
Each state has local Chapters which hold monthly meetings for members but is open to any home inspector interested in becoming a member or simply expanding their knowledge of the profession. The NC ASHI Triad Chapter holds a meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of every month and has a guest speaker that can offer valuable information to the industry.
Pete Burgess, Owner of Tar Heel Basement Systems, was asked to speak at June’s monthly membership meeting on crawlspace encapsulation, basement waterproofing, and foundation repair. Pete established his business in 2003 under the name High Country Basement Systems, specializing in closed crawlspaces. In 2010 he expanded his services to basement and foundation repair, taking on the slogan of “All Things Basements”. With 10+ years of experience dealing with problems underneath the home, Pete was able to give the inspectors some valuable insight into crawlspace, basement and foundation repair.
The topics that he touched on ranged from water intrusion and moisture levels in a crawlspace to options for stabilizing a bowing foundation wall. Additionally, he brought to light the best way to make a home as energy efficient as possible and ways to keep a home healthy and mold-free. The home inspectors in attendance were thrilled to have Tar Heel Basement Systems present, as it only broadened their knowledge of these issues and allowed them to offer advice on ways to solve these problems to homeowners.
