Case Studies: Liberty, NC- Damp Crawl Space Transformed Into Dry Environment

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016 By Jaimie Hooker

Problems in the crawl space had become apparent years ago in this Liberty, NC crawl space. Open vents and an exposed dirt floor had created a damp environment below the home causing the home’s HVAC system to work extra hard due to the condensation build up on the duct work. The homeowners were finally ready to begin the transformation of creating a healthy space below their home.

After a comprehensive evaluation of the crawl space, System Design Specialist, Jeremiah, designed a solution with the homeowners that would accomplish all of their goals and create a dry environment below their home.

The team began by covering each foundation vent along the interior of the crawl space using X-Grade Crawl Space Insulation panels. Unlike, traditional insulation that is made of organic materials, falling victim to mold growth over time, X-Grade Crawl Space Insulation will never deteriorate from mold, moisture or mildew. The humidity began to instantly decrease as the vents became closed. Sealing the home from the exposed dirt was the next step for the team.

Using the 20mil CrawlSeal Encapsulation System, the team began sealing each square foot of the crawl space walls and piers. The exposed dirt floor was then covered using the CrawlSeal Encapsulation System, preventing ground moisture from reaching the home above while the 20mil thickness allows for the homeowners to use the space for storage as it does not rip or tear easily. In order to keep humidity levels low and ensure mold growth would not take over the crawl space, the Aprilaire self-draining dehumidifier was installed.

Tar Heel Basement Systems was able to transform this Liberty, NC crawl space into a healthy environment in just two days. The homeowners now have a lasting storage space below their home.
