Case Studies: Stokesdale, NC Crawl Space Receives Energy Efficient Upgrade

Challenge

During the cooler months of the year, the Stokesdale, NC homeowners would experience cold floors in their home. However, during the summer months, there crawl space would become damp with small amounts of mold forming. The open foundation vents and exposed dirt floors were the culprits causing the homeowners to spend excessive amounts on their heating and cooling bill. Having their personal belongings stored in their crawl space, the homeowners wanted to create a dry and energy-efficient storage space.

Solution

System Design Specialist, Greg Watson, designed a solution along with the homeowners that would meet all of their expectations and goals of creating a dry and energy-efficient storage space.

The crawl space team began the transformation by removing all debris and failing vapor barrier. Once the crawl space floor was completely exposed, the team began sealing each foundation vent and installing the energy-efficient X-Grade Crawl Space Insulation panels along the interior foundation walls. The tiny graphite particles built into the X-Grade Crawl Space Insulation reflect heat back into the crawl space for ultimate energy savings.

As each wall became sealed with X-Grade Crawl Space Insulation, the team began installing the 20mil CrawlSeal liner along the entire crawl space floor and support piers. CrawlSeal was installed under all large appliances in the crawl space ensuring, the home was completely separated from the exposed dirt below.

By sealing each vent and the entire dirt floor, the humidity levels drastically decreased. There was one last step to make sure mold or mildew would not take over the space and ruin the homeowners belongings, installing a commercial grade dehumidifier. The team installed the self-draining Aprilaire dehumidifier to ensure relative humidity levels remained below 55%.

The Stokesdale, NC homeowners now have a dry, conditioned and energy-efficient storage space below their home!
