Challenge

Stair-step and horizontal cracks along the basement wall had formed many years ago. In recent times, the cracks were growing larger, causing the wall to lean in at the top. The Pilot Mountain, NC homeowners were alarmed and needed this problem fixed without major excavation. After a thorough search on Angie’s List, the homeowners called Tar Heel Basement Systems for an evaluation.

Solution

After a thorough inspection and Structural Engineer approval, Tar Heel Basement System designed a solution that would prevent the cracks from becoming larger, stabilize the leaning basement wall and offer the option to straighten the wall over time using IntelliBraces™

The foundation team began by installing heavy-duty steel brackets along the floor joists every six feet, the purpose of installing the brackets is to utilize the joist reinforcement method where the weight of the wall is distributed properly. As the floor joist brackets are installed, the team installed the basement floor brackets to ensure each IntelliBrace™ System would remain stabilized and anchored.

After bracket installation, each IntelliBrace™ is attached to the floor joist bracket and basement floor bracket laying tightly against the basement wall. The zinc coated IntelliBraces™ are resistant to corrosion overtime. Each IntelliBrace™ is then tightened to begin the stabilization and straightening process of the basement wall.

The homeowners now have a stabilized basement wall. Overtime during dry periods the IntelliBraces™ will be tightened allowing for the leaning wall to become straightened over time.
