Winston-Salem, NC - February 6th, 2017
Feeding America Southwest Virginia has been continuously fighting hunger throughout the region for 35 years. Statistically, one in eight residents of Southwest Virginia suffers from hunger, leaving a dramatic 57% of families choosing between food and housing. Their mission is to feed Southwest Virginia’s hungry through a network of partners and engage our region in the fight against hunger. This mission is not possible without the numerous amounts of donations that are received on a daily basis and distributed to food banks throughout the area.
As part of the Pay it Forward Initiative, Tar Heel Basement Systems partnered with Feeding America SWVA to help families in need. During the month of January, the team members of THBS were challenged to donate 250 non-perishable food items. After a two-week food drive, the basement contractor shattered their goal, collecting 1,000 various meal items. The purpose of this community project is to make a large difference for the residents and change the statistics. The donated items will be dropped off at the Abingdon, VA Distribution Center on Wednesday, February 8th and sent to food banks throughout 11 counties of the Southwest Virginia region.

In an effort to spread awareness of the hunger issues in our country, THBS participated in a fun company-wide Can Building Challenge. Each department designed a unique can structure that will be showcased on the THBS Facebook page this week where viewers can vote for their favorite structure. The department that receives the most “likes” will win a free meal!
