Flourish in February with Tar Heel Basement Systems Food Drive

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina provides food and education to individuals across 18 counties including Alamance, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe Caldwell, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin.

Amongst this service area, 1 in 6 people faces hunger. In addition to providing food to our hungry neighbors, Second Harvest aims to educate our communities on nutrition, childhood hunger and resources that are available.

According to hungernwnc.org, “more than 1 in 4 children in Northwest NC are living with food insecurity and they lack consistent access to the nutrition they need to grow strong and thrive.” What many people do not understand is that, unfortunately, the “affordable and accessible” foods are the ones with little or no nutritional value. Foods high in fat, oils, and sugar provide calories, but few nutrients. These foods make up a high percentage of diets because they are inexpensive and easy to obtain.

To this end, Tar Heel Basement Systems will host a “Flourish in February” Food Drive during the last two weeks of February. With the focus on promoting healthy food choices, Tar Heel Basement Systems is asking all participants to donate healthful foods for those with limited financial resources to supplement their restricted choices with healthy alternatives.

Here is a list of some of the best foods to donate to the “Flourish in February” Food Drive:

-Canned or dry fruits and vegetables in an array of colors to ensure consumption of a variety of vitamins and minerals.

-Non-perishable whole grains as the first ingredient for maximum nutritional value.

-Canned lean meats as a good source of low-fat protein and canned or dry beans as a good source of fiber.

-Shelf-stable low-fat dairy products fortified with vitamin D.

*Be sure to look for foods with low-sodium, 100% fruit/vegetable juice, no syrup, low fat, whole grain, fat-free, no sugar added, etc.

The “Flourish in February” Food Drive will begin on February 17th and end on March 3rd. To make a healthy donation and help get food to those in need, please stop by one of our office locations; Winston Salem – 2910 Griffith Rd or Boone – 206 Southgate Dr. (Next to Hunan).
