The Partnership with Communities in Schools of Wake County helps students reach their full learning potential

Tar Heel School Drive
Winston-Salem, NC (September 20, 2018) – Tar Heel Basement Systems, a Groundworks Company joined Communities in Schools of Wake County in their annual school supply drive. As part of the company’s Goodworks program, food and school supplies were donated to the organization’s effort to help schools in Wake County remove the barriers that put students at risk of wasting their full potential. Low socioeconomical disadvantage and many related challenges can impede the ability of some students to maximize their education.

Over 225 items were donated by Tar Heel employees, their families and friends. Lunch snacks included granola bars, chips, fruit snacks, Jello, Gold Fish and other lunch bag items. School supplies included flash drives, Sharpies, pens, pencils, calculators, page protectors and other items to use in the class room. Hygiene items and clothes were also included.

“Communities In Schools surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life” Said Lisa Berwyn, Director of Advancement & DonorTHBS School Drive Engagement for Communities in Schools of Wake County. “We are so grateful to our community partners like Tar Heel Basement systems who have come together to donate much needed school supplies so that our students will have the tools they need to be successful in the classroom.”

“The employees at Tar Heel Basement Systems are especially passionate about helping children and young teens who could use the extra hand in school” Said Jackie Hoffman. Jackie leads the Goodworks program for the company. “All young people deserve the chance to get a good education without being hindered by the lack of food and school supplies.”

The Groundworks Companies Goodworks was established to unify all 5 of the Groundworks Brands under one community service initiative. While each branch office partners with a different nonprofit organization throughout the year, the goal is to encourage employees to get involved in at least one community service project per quarter. Tar Heel Basement Systems employeesTH School Drive chose to help the Communities in Schools of Wake Field for their third quarter charitable giving partnership.

About Communities in Schools of Wake County

Communities In Schools of Wake County (CIS Wake) help schools in Wake County remove the barriers that put students at risk of wasting their potential. According to Wake County Public School System, the average daily enrollment last year exceeded 160,000 students. Wake is the largest school system in the state; its population has almost tripled since 1980 and more than 9,000 additional children are expected by 2020. Barriers such as low socioeconomic disadvantage, and many related challenges, impact many students in Wake County.
For nearly 30 years, CIS Wake has partnered with WCPSS to place staff within schools to provide integrated student support for students. CIS Wake Success Coaches have supported vulnerable students for almost a decade; this includes students who a) commit chronic behavior infractions, b) lack support systems within their homes, c) are gang-affiliated and d) experience mental health challenges and crises.

CIS Wake also serve students in four learning centers located in public housing communities. Part-time certified teachers and volunteers support staff for up to four hours each day after school. In addition, we’re delivering STEM-based afterschool programming within our learning centers for students who are bused to over 30 different schools, leaving the learning center as a safe haven for homework completion when returning home.

CIS Wake’s foundational approach of academic case management helps students achieve in and out of the classroom. Academic case management involves goal-setting with students; constant communication with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders; and monitoring student outcomes in three key areas: Attendance, Behavior, and Course Success in the core subjects of Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. For attendance, the goal is that students are in school for 90% or more days of instruction; for behavior, our goal is that no student is long-term suspended; and for course success, our goal is that students receive grades of C or better in core subjects. CIS Wake also provides periodic services and access to resources that address community and school-wide needs. Examples include the distribution of school supplies, facilitating job shadow opportunities, and guest speakers that motivate students toward academic success. Mission Statement: Communities In Schools of Wake County surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
