DOs and DON’Ts of Basement Wall Remedies

Once you’ve waterproofed and dehumidified your basement, your next step will most likely be making the area look nice and feel comfortable. The most common basement wall complaint is efflorescence. This is the chalky, white powder one might find coating sections of a basement wall. It isn’t mold or anything dangerous, it is simply a mineral residue. Other complaints might be staining from a previous water problem or flaking paint.

When solving your basement wall problems, DON’T go for a coating or paint. This “solution” is a temporary fix that won’t stay for long. Vapor coming from the dirt through the wall will push the paint off causing it to flake and fall off making it even more unsightly. Paints and coatings also do not prevent mold growth and may actually encourage it.

Instead of painting your walls, DO look into paneling or vapor barriers. None of them will rot, bow or grow mold and will keep any moisture from seeping into your home.

If you are looking for a fully finished basement look, Tar Heel Basement System’s ExTremeBloc paneling (pictured) will serve you well. It has a vapor barrier backing, a fiberglass core and a vinyl finish on the front.

For a more basic finishing solution, paneling will make the area lighter and more welcoming. It also acts as a vapor barrier keeping any moisture from penetrating the area. For stone or when finishing a basement, the floor matting system works even harder to make the area comfortable. Its design will keep your basement at a comfortable temperature, stop water vapor and drain any leaks.
