Basement dandruff. Paint & wall coatings will only flake over time – even if they read ‘special for basements’ on the can.
Wall coatings are not a good option simply because the water and water vapor are already through the wall by the time they get to the coatings and push the coating off of the wall. When they begin to peel and flake, the wall looks worse that it did in the first place and your money has been wasted.
What’s that white chalky powder on your walls? Efflorescence is from minerals in the concrete, mortar, or soil that dissolve in water and remain behind when the water evaporates off the surface of the wall or floor. It appears as white powder or crystals. It is sometimes confused with mold, but it is not alive – just mineral residue. It is not harmful and can be swept or brushed off. However, it is a sign that water is coming through the wall or floor and should be addressed by a professional.
