Freezing Discharge Lines

Sump pumps remove water from your basement, but if your exterior discharge line freezes or becomes blocked, that water could end up back in your basement. Learn more about how you can prevent this with a simple solution.

frozen exterior drainage pipe

Your sump pump gets the water out of your basement or crawl space and away from your house with a pipe–usually plastic also known as a discharge line. The pipe runs on the surface of the ground, or in a shallow buried trench, and discharges the water on to the surface away from the house.

The problem is that in winter the outlet of the discharge line becomes blocked with snow and ice. When your sump pump runs, it fills the pipe with water. Since the water cannot get out of the discharge line due to the ice at the outlet, the pipe fills up with water and freezes. Now your sump pump runs, but cannot get the water out, and your basement floods. Just what you were trying to avoid!

FreezeGuard on exterior of home

Tar Heel Basement Systems provides a solution–The FreezeGuard™ System. A specially engineered fitting attached to your discharge line that goes outside of your home and automatically ejects the water away from the exterior wall in the event the pipe freezes. The FreezeGuard™ is designed with holes in it to allow this to happen, yet no water at all gets out of these openings when the pipe is not frozen.
