This week Tar Heel Basement Systems hosted Big Brothers Big Sisters for their Summer Reading Program. This eight-week program allows the children to attend various educational field trips throughout the week at different facilities and businesses in the area. Tar Heel Basement Systems was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the July program hosts for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The children arrived at Tar Heel’s facility in Winston Salem on Thursday morning full of energy!

First, the children took a tour of the facility and spoke with different THBS employees about why reading was essential for them to do their Job. Next, the children congregated in the conference room for a fun “icebreaker” and to collect their “I Love Reading” backpacks, construction helmets and books. Tar Heel’s employees donated numerous children’s books for the kids to take home with them.
Next, the children made their way into the training room where individual canvases on easels were awaiting them. Local Winston Salem business, Merlot, and VanGogh, donated all of the art supplies for the children to use. This included canvases, easels, paint, paint brushes, etc. Each of the children was asked to paint their “dream home.” The kids knew exactly what they wanted their dream home to look like and went right to work. The paintings were incredible and the kids were excited to take them home with them!

Finally, we ended the day with a delicious lunch which was generously donated by Which Wich of Winston Salem. Each of the kids had their personal boxed lunch, complete with a cookie and chips.
This event would not have been possible without the amazing volunteers from the Tar Heel Basement Systems and generous donations from our local business partners! We hope to have inspired these children to reach their goals and create a bright future for themselves!
