Solid Foundation: Strategies in Small Business

The Triad Business Journal’s Kyra Gemberling met with Pete Burgess, Owner of Tar Heel Basement Systems, a few months back to get the scoop on how he was able to successfully grow a small business during these tough economic times. In her write-up in The Business Journal entitled, Tar Heel Basement Systems Expands to Better Serve the Triad, Kyra discusses Pete’s business conception and what it has grown into today.

Little did Pete know, after reading an article about closed crawlspaces 2003, he was on his way to owning one of the Triad’s 50 fastest growing companies. Over the last 10 years, Tar Heel Basement Systems has expanded services- adding basement waterproofing and foundation repair- and increased their service area to help homeowners in Boone, Winston Salem, Greensboro and their surrounding areas.

While the article clearly exemplifies Tar Heel Basement Systems growth, Kyra was able to get to the heart of what it takes to grow your business, which is going where the customers are. Pete made a tough decision when he decided to move his company’s headquarters down the mountain, but he said it was necessary if the company was to continue to grow. Tar Heel Basement Systems still maintains an office in Boone to service the High Country’s homeowners in need of basement waterproofing, crawl space repair, radon mitigation and foundation repair.

In closing, Pete was asked, “what’s the best advice you have to give to entrepreneurs?” He replied, “pick the brain of another entrepreneur. There’s probably more wisdom in there than virtually anything else you can try to gain on Earth.”
