THBS recognized for giving back to local community
Monday, June 9th, 2014
The first thing you see when you walk into the Tar Heel Basement Systems facility is the company’s mission statement painted on the wall: “To Help Our Customers, Employees, and Community through Responsibility, Integrity & Trust!” When Owner, Pete Burgess, started the company in 2003, he wanted to not only be the best in the industry but to stand out from other companies in our industry.
So what makes Tar Heel Basement Systems different from other home improvement contractors? One key component is our team’s desire to give back to our community and those in need. Tar Heel’s “pay it forward” initiative launched back in 2013, helping local organizations across Northwest North Carolina by using a more “hands-on” approach. “It is easy for a company to write a check, but it takes time, effort and passion for a business to truly make a difference in the community,” proclaims Tar Heel’s Marketing Director, Jackie Hoffman. “We encourage our employees to get involved with these local charities on a much more personal level. Each Tar Heel team member is given (5) paid hours per year to spend volunteering at a local non-profit in the community.”
Some of the employee involvement includes cooking meals at the Ronald McDonald House monthly, hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive at our facility (more than 30 of our employees gave blood and the rest were volunteers), repairing crawl spaces for Habitat for Humanity homes (more than 30), food drives, toy drives, school supply drives and much more. In fact, every month Tar Heel Basement Systems chooses a local charity/organization to “pay it forward” to. “The effort that our employees have put towards this initiative is more than I could have ever imagined,” proclaimed Tar Heel’s Owner, Pete Burgess. “It is great to know that I have hired individuals that live our mission statement and want to make a difference, not only in our customer’s homes but in our community as well.”
Tar Heel Basement Systems’ “Pay It Forward” program has received quite a bit of recognition throughout the community. Many people and organizations are impressed to see such a charitable program amidst a local home improvement company. In fact, Todd Cohen, creator of Philanthropy NC, recently wrote a column in the Triad Business Journal’s Philanthropy section in regards to Tar Heel’s humanitarian approach.
