Case Study: Winston Salem, NC

Challenge

This older Winston Salem, NC home had structural cracks throughout the basement walls, with one wall starting to bow outwards. Homeowner, Mrs. West, also had troubles with moisture seeping through the basement walls during heavy rainstorms. Built in 1966, this basement was in need of some TLC.

This Triad homeowner called Tar Heel Basement Systems to fix all of her concerns once and for all. System Design Specialist, Danny Harrell, went out to Mrs. West’s home and completed a full inspection, taking an extra careful look at the structural cracks. Danny was challenged with finding a solution for stabilizing the basement walls while fixing the moisture issue. Danny was able to design a specific plan that addressed all of Mrs. West’s needs.

Solution

Tar Heel Basement Systems was tasked with stabilizing the cracked walls, while also securing the bowing wall. The foundation crew began the stabilization process by installing 12 Carbon Fiber Strips along the walls. The Carbon Fiber Reinforcing System is perfect for homes with limited access in the yard; there is no digging or use of large equipment on the exterior of the home. Carbon Fiber is a high tensile strength material that is installed on the interior of the basement wall. The low-profile design allows for installation around plumbing pipes and electrical conduit. The structural repair crew then installed 3 IntelliBraces™ along the bowed wall. IntelliBraces™ are a patented product, designed specifically for the interior of the basement wall and allow for potential straightening over time. Additionally, the zinc coating makes the entire system corrosion resistant.

Next, the team began the waterproofing process for Mrs. West’s basement. Co-Foreman, Adam Canter, began installing the BasementGutter drainage system along the entire perimeter of the basement. The patented BasementGutter system is a piping system engineered specifically to solve basement water problems without getting clogged from soils underneath the floor. After the BasementGutter was installed, the crew began installing the SafeDri triple sump pump– the world’s most reliable pumping system that is specifically designed for basements. The airtight lid keeps dirt and debris out and also automatically pumps the water out of the basement and away from the home using a discharge line. The BasementGutter System is then connected to the SafeDri, ensuring Mrs. West’s basement will stay permanently dry.

Mrs. West’s scary basement has now been stabilized and waterproofed while also having a bright, beautiful finished look thanks to Tar Heel Basement Systems!
