Tar Heel Basements Systems Gives Back – A Year in Review

Tar Heel Basement Systems gave back to the community in so many ways. We had multiple Pay It Forward initiatives throughout the year including our annual blood drive, pet supply and food drive, canned food drive and school supply drive. We don’t just collect items, we also participate in community events such as serving a meal at the Ronald McDonald house or a Habitat for Humanity build. By community, we consider all of our service area where we can help our customers with their homes, our community, so we help all over North Carolina.

We started 2017 off with our canned food drive to support the Feeding America program through the Southwest Virginia chapter. This is a non-profit organization that helps families by offering a food pantry mostly from donations they’ve received. Our donations went to the Abingdon, Virginia distribution center.
Following up in February, several of our employees visited with the children at ABC of NC, which is a child development center for children with Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder. They had activity stations set up for the children and our team, including a painting station, music station, and even an outdoor golf station. The staff said they didn’t know who was smiling more over the golf station, the children or our employees!

We began our fund-raising efforts in March for the annual Hammerbird 5K which supports Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County. The race is actually held in April but we wanted to get an early start for raising awareness and funds. In addition to the monetary donation, Tar Heel Basement Systems also donated a patented crawlspace encapsulation ($5000 value) to a new Habitat build or a for a Habitat renovation project. We had about 30 runners participate including employees and their family members.
In May we held our annual pet drive where we collected dry dog food, cat litter, small dog beds, Clorox, and other supplies throughout the month and then donated those items in June to the Stokes County Animal Shelter. The shelter is a small, rural facility in Germanton just north of Winston-Salem and runs almost completely off of donations. They hope to build a larger facility in the next year, so donations are key to help them save up the funds needed. Also during our pet drive, THBS hosts a company pet photo contest which our customers, employees, and social media followers can vote on the cutest pet photo. Also in June, we had our annual blood drive which we incorporate into a team building day for all of the THBS employees.

After seeing so many precious fur-babies, it’s hard to imagine anything sweeter – until you host a field day for seniors! Which is exactly what Tar Heel Basements did for the Watauga County Project on Aging at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center in Boone. With outdoor games like corn hole, horseshoes, ladder ball and croquet, the elders wiped the floor with all of the Tar Heel employees (who were all in their 30s or younger)! After the games were over they invited us to stay and play a few rounds of Bingo with them while everyone cooled off from the July heat.
As August rolled in, we began another annual drive that helps adults and children – our school supply drive. This year we teamed up with The Educator Warehouse in Winston where teachers can go “shop” for the supplies they need for their classroom. Everything from filler paper, crayons, and glue to hand sanitizer, paper towels, and Kleenex that has all been donated by various businesses and individuals. The teachers don’t have to pay for these items which is why the donations are so important and we continued to collect supplies into September.
In October we wanted to help another group of folks that sometimes just need a helping hand to get them back on their feet. Our employees purchased and donated hundreds of travel size toiletries, toothbrushes, combs, feminine products, and snacks. The goal was to make over 100 bags which we surpassed with over 200 “survival kits” that were then distributed to three local shelters in Lenoir, Durham, and Asheboro.

Winding down the year in November, the Tar Heel team began a new sponsorship campaign with the American Heart Association called “Home is where the Heart is”. We began fundraising as well as preparing for the Heart & Stroke Walk in downtown Winston Salem. Our group of two dozen plus employees and their family members along with nearly a dozen dogs walked nearly 40 miles combined. The funds raised went to local research projects right there in Winston at the Wake Forest Baptist research hospital.
As always we “wrapped” up the year and many Christmas gifts for kids at the Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville. Knowing a child is getting something they really want for Christmas will warm anyone’s heart, which is why the angel tree is our employee’s favorite way to give back!
